FAQ

1. What is LAB5?
LAB5 is a six-month on-site transdisciplinary laboratory for collective creation, designed for artists living in Berlin. It invites five participants, selected through an open call, to engage in collaborative research, experimentation, and artistic making, guided by a thematic focus. The program emphasizes process and dialogue rather than the production of a finalized artwork.

2. Who can apply?
LAB5 is open to Berlin-based artists from any discipline who are interested in transdisciplinary collaboration. We welcome participants committed to process-based work, knowledge exchange, and collective experimentation.

3. How long is the program?
The program runs for six months: February – July 2026, culminating in a public exhibition at the end of July.

4. What does the program include?

  • Monthly curatorial mentorship sessions supporting the collective development.

  • Four thematic workshops (two led by the coordination team, two participant-led).

  • Studio openings to share processes and practices in horizontal, relational settings.

  • Access to the makerspace at Philipp Schaeffer Library for material and technological experimentation.

  • A common meeting space for planning, reflection, and collective dialogue.

  • Public exhibition at the end of the program.

5. How is the program structured?

  • February: Introduction, mapping of interests, and first coordination-led workshop.

  • March: Studio openings (first round) + curatorial mentorship.

  • April: Second coordination-led workshop + planning sessions.

  • May: Studio openings (second round) + participant-led workshop.

  • June: Participant-led workshop + exhibition preparation.

  • July: Final reflections, setup, and public exhibition.

6. What is expected from participants?
Participants are expected to engage fully in collaborative activities, share their practices, experiment with materials, and contribute to the collective work. The focus is on exploration, dialogue, and situated research, not on producing a finished product.
